Job Summary

Technical Advisor have established a record of achievement through existing products, patents, publications, and/or customer/supplier interactions.  Technical Advisor are responsible for the conduct and direction of present and future applications and technology efforts in one or more key product, process, applications science, or customer/supplier support areas.  Technical Advisor have demonstrated a well-developed set of experimental, scientific, and project management skills and possess the ability to manage multiple projects.  Technical Advisor have achieved extensive knowledge of the critical needs and strategies of the business and are expected to exercise a high level of autonomy when formulating decisions regarding project conduct but will also adequately communicate and document to the senior management and involve them in critical decision-making processes when appropriate.

Primary Duties & Responsibilities

• Laboratory leader providing technical support to all Minerals Technologies Inc. business areas and customers especially in the metal testing technique using AA, ICP-MS, ICP-OES and related digestion methods for the geological samples such as Carbonates and Clay.
• Responsibility for leading staff, including recruitment, selection, performance management and all other aspects of people leadership.
• Lead and/or coordinate efforts with other MTI functional groups outside ASG.
• Trains others on metal testing technique including ICP-MS and ICP-OES instruments and other relevant technique and methods and provides training resources as required.
• Maintain effective stewardship over laboratory resources. Assist management in planning for instrumentation and manning changes.
• Influence the technical directions undertaken by MTI for metal testing techniques.
• Performs and oversees research as necessary to examine the suitability of test procedures and makes recommendations concerning the addition, modification, or replacement of test procedures and equipment. Conducts research necessary to solve unique problems as directed.
• Issues timely oral and written technical reports of investigations including conclusions and interpretations with the goal of solving technical problems using ingenuity and creativity to provide these technical solutions.
• Develop relationships with professional colleagues outside MTI in pertinent technical and business fields.
• Develop internal relationships with technical peers in other business segments as well as other resource units such as engineering, operations, sales, and finance.
• Pass along research techniques and institutional knowledge to MTI employees through seminars and written documents.
• Generates ideas for new technology development (i.e, NPPD) that support business growth plans.
• Promote business area through involvement with technical associations and presentations.
• Demonstrates technical leadership in articulating concepts and relevancy in developing business strategy.
• Independently search & interpret the technical & patent literature to enhance understanding of mechanisms.
• Bring awareness of opportunities or threats from newly developing technologies to provide guidance on geological material testing and business strategy.
• Prepare, document (written), and present new product/process, applications, fundamental, and cost reduction concepts and results to senior management.
• Be recognized within the technical community outside MTI and be involved in technical and professional societies. Use the awareness of outside competitive technologies to identify opportunities (e.g., growth, cost savings) and threats to the business unit’s current plan and/or long-term strategy.
• Leverage their technical competencies to benefit the corporate and/or other business units by consulting with them as appropriate.

Qualifications/Requirements

• Broad knowledge of analytical techniques used for material analysis specially in metal testing using wide range of techniques such as AA, ICP-OES, and ICP-MS.
• Supervising and Strong troubleshooting skills.
• Broad knowledge of industrial minerals and the markets/products of their use
• Broad knowledge of commercial testing lab business
• Broad knowledge of regulatory compliance of industrial minerals
• Broad knowledge of process analytical technology

• Quality System Management experience ISO/IEC 17025 preferred
• Knowledge and Understanding of Worldwide Food and Pharmaceutical Compendia
• Expert skills for statistical treatment of data including Measurement Uncertainty and use of statistical software such Minitab
• LIMS experience
• Continuous Improvement mindset
• Ability to effectively communicate complex technical problems verbally and in written form
• Fluency in reading, writing and speaking English
• Certification in black belt or similar

Education:      

Requires PhD or Master of Science in physical science (Chemistry, Material Science, Geology, etc.) is required.  Must have minimum 10 plus years of relevant work experience.  

Travel:      

No significant degree of business travel required.  Occasional business conference travel may be required.

Working Conditions:

This position will be split between an office and laboratory setting.  At times, personal protective equipment including but not limited to safety glasses and safety shoes are required.  While performing the duties of this job, the employee is typically required to regularly conduct work in a controlled office environment, moving around the office as needed, sitting at a desk, using office equipment, including but not limited to a personal computer, fax machine, copier and telephone, read, write, listen, speak, and understand English, have the ability to work independently, be dependable and maintain confidential information, integrity and composure at all times.

On an as needed basis, there will be exposure to plant areas, which include exposure to outside weather conditions as well as loud noise from equipment and dust from production processes. 

Work Hours:

Monday to Friday 8:00am to 5:00pm but must have ability to work the number of hours in which duties need to be accomplished, including overtime, holidays and weekends, as necessary. 

Safety Training: 

A new employee hired to perform the duties of this position is required to be provided New Employee Training by a qualified individual or through the online training system.  Additionally, an employee must be provided further training if a job duty/task has changes that will affect the health and safety aspects of that employee’s position.

Additional refresher safety training will be required as management deems appropriate or as dictated by government regulations.
