Job Summary: 

 

The Manufacturing Engineer (ME) is one of the most important components of the lean manufacturing and business process. The ME is responsible for driving the most complete levels of understanding and execution of problem solving, the continuous improvement process, and performing critical data analysis that helps the business understand and improve its operations. An expert at process optimization and documentation, the ME creates the standards of the business through rapid experiments, formal standard work, standard operating procedures, checklists, startup processes, troubleshooting guides, etc. Proficient at teaching and coaching, the ME elevates those in the plant by teaching them the continuous improvement tools and coaches others to utilize the tools. One of the most versatile resources in the plant, the ME will work closely with the Plant Manager, other internal plant resources, and company-wide resources to solve the needs of the business.

Responsibilities

Primary Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Champion of the Operational Excellence (Lean Manufacturing)
  • Drive Variable Cost Conversion (VCC) reduction through deployment of Operational Excellence methods.
  • Train and coach other team members on OE methods and techniques (daily management, standard work, A3s, fishbone diagrams, 5 Whys, etc.)
  • Root cause problem solving – owns driving the entire process (quantification, investigation, 5 Whys, target condition, implementation, follow-up, sustaining results, etc.)
  • Drive sustainable machine OEE improvement activities utilizing machine/operator observation and pareto analysis
  • Standard Work – development of the currently best-known process, documentation, training of the standard
  • Creation of maintenance trouble shooting guides
  • Development of Daily Management Control processes at machine and plant levels
  • Data analysis for labor, finances, production capacity, efficiency, etc.
  • Time studies of manufacturing lines and identification of line bottlenecks
  • Creation of 5S standards, implementation of shadow boards, audits, etc.
  • Lead Kaizen events (including the preparation, execution, follow up and sustainment)
  • Observations of shop floor (people and equipment) to find improvement opportunities
  • Creation of min/max systems for critical supplies
  • Create machine operation procedures
  • Lead investigation and corrective actions for customer related feedback
  • Participate and lead capital project identification, procurement process, and implementation
  • Plant layout – improve flow, reduce wasted motion, separate mobile equipment and pedestrian interactions
  • Calculate capacities of both people and machines

Qualifications

Qualifications/Requirements:

Education:

Bachelor of Science Engineering (BSE) degree in Manufacturing, Industrial or Mechanical Engineering

 

Certifications:

Six Sigma, or other lean certifications, preferred.

 

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

  • Extensive Knowledge of lean manufacturing / operational excellence principles. Able to develop and deploy Standard Work, lead Kaizen events, lead TPM events, and other related topics.
  • Advanced capability in Microsoft Excel to create accurate and professional documentation, creating checklists, sign off sheets, and the utilization of pivot tables for data analysis. Proficient with building tables and charts. Must use Excel for creation of standard work combination charts and layouts.
  • Advanced capability in Microsoft Power Point for building plant/company communications, documentation of problem solving, creating training curriculum, Kaizen documentation, etc.
  • Advanced capability in Microsoft Word to document business processes and procedures.
  • Power BI experience, as a user of dashboards, preferred.
  • Read, write, speak and understand English

 

Travel:  <10%. Travel is not required for daily functions but will be required for occasional visits to other plants for bench marking and knowledge sharing.

 

Working Conditions:

While performing the duties of this job, an employee is regularly exposed to dust, loud noise, height, confined spaces, very low and/or bright light, and outside weather conditions.

 

Work Hours:

Must have ability to work the shift/number of hours in which duties need to be accomplished, including overtime, holidays, and weekends, as necessary. Requiring availability to address urgent repairs or emergencies.

 

Safety Equipment:

Safety equipment typically required while performing the duties of this job includes a lockout/tagout lock, ANSI approved hard hat and safety glasses with side shields, safety boots/shoes with steel toe protection, and cut resistant gloves. Hearing protection is required in certain areas. Additional personal protective equipment is available for use if a situation arises where it becomes required or if it is simply desired by the employee.
