Job Summary

The Works Manager, under minimal supervision, is responsible for: (1) ensuring the highest level of safety awareness and safe behaviors; (2) directing all manufacturing functions for the Adams plant to ensure quality output, on time delivery, at optimum cost; (3) planning for capital improvements and CIP projects; (4) maintaining focus on continuous improvement while insuring compliance with all applicable EHS requirements and regulations; (5) overseeing planning and execution to ensure goals and objectives are met; (6) developing subordinates and team members; (7) establishing effective employee relations to ensure the availability of a well-trained and motivated work force; (8) performing other related duties including liaison with sales, marketing, and research departments.

 

The ideal candidate will possess strong operational excellence skills with the ability to teach key processes to the workforce.  This person will be a strong leader of people, with the ability to create change through a focused strategy and superior execution skills in support of the MTI vision.  The candidate is required to have strong technical skill in chemical synthesis or related disciplines with the ability to drive new product and process development work.

Pay: Approximately $200k depending on experience

Responsibilities

Major Duties and Responsibilities:

 

Operations

  1. Directs the manufacture of products at the plant.
  2. Maintains adequate controls over the flow of production to ensure that schedules will be attained through effective internal production planning and control systems and procedures.
  3. Ensures that products meet established quality standards and customer specifications utilizing appropriate quality control systems and procedures.
  4. Provides for adequate materials and supplies to meet schedule requirements while maintaining established inventory levels.
  5. Controls all direct and indirect labor and material cost in order that budget objectives are realized.
  6. Provides for the maintenance of all equipment, buildings, and facilities.

 

Planning

  1. Anticipates future labor needs to ensure proper depth of qualified personnel as required.
  2. Develops the capital and operating budgets.
  3. Coordinates with the General Manager - GCC any need for new equipment and facilities and the disposition of worn or obsolete equipment in order to meet the established production, quality, and cost goals of the Plant and the division.
  4. Participates in the review and approval of all CPA's.
  5. Plans and executes at the plant, special projects and studies such as cost improvement programs (CIP) and elimination of hazards and pollution in order to improve operations and reduce costs.

 

Industrial Relations & Personnel

  1. Develops and maintains an effective organizational structure within the plant and properly staffs all positions as required.
  2. Provides for the training of new and inexperienced personnel.
  3. Makes recommendations for wage and salary increases for plant personnel.
  4. Provides for an effective and ongoing plant safety program.
  5. Manages to achieve Plant EOA objectives and ensures that personnel practices are fair and consistent with Governmental regulations.

 

Continuous Improvement/Lean 

  1. Acts as resource and champion for Plant Operational Excellence activities (Suggestion Program, 5S, Kaizen, TPM, problem solving, etc.).
  2. Works with Management staff to promote individual employee involvement in continuous improvement activities and ensure equal opportunities are available for all employees to participate and contribute.

 

Other Related Duties

  1. Participates in the activities of technical and professional societies when such participation will promote the interests of the plant, division, and the corporation.
  2. Contributes to the Corporation's relations with customers and the public by action and example.
  3. Participates in civic and community projects in order to enhance the image of the Company.

 

Principal Working Relationships:

  1. Reports to the General Manager - GCC
  2. Cooperates with Divisional sales department personnel in the development and maintenance of good customer relations by meeting the quality and quantity demands of customers.
  3. Works with other Plant Managers in solving production and quality problems reviewing common problems relating to matters of personnel and developing better Division-wide control of manufacturing.
  4. Works with the Global Controller in matters relating to budgets, equipment utilization, and the reporting and control of costs.
  5. Works with Division Engineering personnel in the formulation of estimates for expenditure, and the selection of equipment.
  6. Works with the General Manager - GCC in effective handling of all matters of an industrial relations nature.
  7. Works with the members of the Division Research Department in the transfer of new products.
  8. Cooperates with any and all plants, divisions, and corporate staff departments by actively supporting programs developed by them.
  9. Works closely with all Plant staff managers to keep communication lines on Plant activities updated and to give overall guidance on the nature and priority of specific tasks and projects.

Qualifications

Education: Incumbent should possess a Bachelor's degree in engineering, and have from five to ten years of production related experience to include a multi-disciplined exposure in the areas of engineering, research, accounting, industrial relations, etc.  Incumbent is responsible for the operations of a plant with annual expenses in excess of 48 million dollars.

 

Must have a well-developed understanding of and proven experience in a Lean Manufacturing  Environment including 5S, PDCA, Standard Work, Kaizen, TPM, and other CI methodologies.  Must have financial management experience and proven analytical and problem solving skills.  Effective communication skills as well as strong organizational and PC skills are required.   Must have a proven track record of being a change agent and leader and have the ability to empower employees and promote development of  High Performance Work Systems.  Incumbent must have good technical skills and the ability to develop the plant processes.  Incumbent must have a well-developed business understanding, excellent written and oral communication and presentation skills, strong inter-personal skills, and the ability to communicate effectively with, to motivate others and to promote a positive work atmosphere.    Must be able to work effectively with all levels of employees within the company.  Incumbent must be a self-starter who seeks responsibility and is able to work with minimal direction.  Incumbent must have demonstrated a willingness to challenge conventional ideas, to be a flexible, innovative & creative individual and one who can function effectively in a team format.

 

Working Conditions: While performing the duties of this job, the employee is typically required to regularly conduct work in a controlled office environment, moving around the office as needed, sitting at a desk, and using office equipment, including but not limited to a personal computer, fax, copier and phone.  Constant contact with individuals internal and external to the organization occurs via various methods of communication typically including face-to-face discussions, electronic mail, phone calls, written letters and/or faxes.  On a frequent basis, there may be exposure to plant production areas, which includes exposure to outside weather conditions as well as loud noise from equipment and dust from production processes.  Exposure to plant areas requires the use of appropriate safety equipment.  Personal protective equipment is available for employee use in these circumstances.

 

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is typically required to have the ability to work in an office environment, using office equipment as needed, read, write, listen, speak, and understand English, follow instructions and other oral/written information, compose correspondence in a professional manner, complete paperwork and other documentation accurately, work independently and with others, communicate effectively with all individuals internal and external to the organization, analyze information/situations as needed, be organized and detail-oriented, be able to identify/judge the urgency of a situation, use judgment in decision making and use creativity and negotiation when necessary.

 

The employee is expected to be self-directed, take initiative and be persistent when appropriate to accomplish necessary duties and keep busy without prompting.  Additionally, the employee is expected to be adaptable/flexible to changing work assignments, have a high level of integrity, motivate and lead others/provide direction, have dependability and self-control to maintain composure, perform multiple tasks at once, learn and memorize procedures, manage time effectively and efficiently, meet established deadlines, display a cooperative attitude, read, understand and follow all company, job specific and safety policies/procedures, and attend/use all required training.  Ability to travel is preferred.

 

Safety Training: A new employee hired to perform the duties of this position is to be provided New Employee Training from a qualified individual, which consists of classroom training and may include a tour of plant area(s). Additional refresher safety training will be required as management deems appropriate and/or as dictated by MSHA regulations.
