Job Summary

The Safety & Environmental Manager, under limited supervision, is responsible for providing support to the Environmental/Safety Manager in all areas of Host Mills and worker safety.  This position will serve as backup to Environmental/Safety Director during his/her absence.  Works safely and actively promotes the safety culture and philosophy of MTI in all work activities.

Safety

• Plan and coordinate all safety training programs, recommend safety incentive and award programs. Conduct safety meetings.
• Provide follow-up and assistance to address STOP card issues.
• Assist with incident investigations (Near Miss, Injuries, Environmental, and Property Damage.)
• Develop JHA’s, Standard Work and safe work practices at work sites.
• Visit multiple work sites in the south region of the United States.
• Attend Safety meetings at Host mill work sites.
• Participate in Safety Committee member duties.
• Manage annual medical monitoring within your region.
• Manage and assist with PPE supplies within your region.
• Administer safety orientation programs
• Perform worksite inspections.

1. Assess priorities and develop corrective actions.
2. Follow up on worksite inspection issues.

• Participate in and help provide closure to all safety inspections.
• Conduct safety analyses on specific jobs where required.
• Be able to travel up to 50% of the time.

Actively participate in the implementation of sustainable improvement processes, such as 5S, Total Productive Maintenance (TPM), Daily Management Control, Standard Work and Problem Solving.

Other Duties & Responsibilities

• Perform work as assigned to support both the Host Mills activities and Equipment installations.

Incumbent should possess a bachelor’s degree with five years related experience. Must have the ability to communicate effectively, to motivate others and to promote a positive work atmosphere.  The incumbent must be a self-starter who can work effectively with a minimum of supervision.  Must have the ability to work effectively with all levels of employees within the company.  Incumbent must have demonstrated a willingness to challenge conventional ideas, be flexible, innovative and be able to function effectively in a team format. A working knowledge of basic computer systems, including Microsoft Word and Excel is required.

While performing the duties of this job, an employee is typically required to read, write, listen, speak and understand English, follow all instructions and other oral/written information, visually inspect equipment/work area, complete paperwork and other documentation accurately, identify, analyze, troubleshoot and solve issues using judgement and mechanical knowledge/abilities, react quickly as needed, be organized and detail oriented, be able to identify/judge the urgency of a situation, use judgement in decision making, communicate effectively with others, be aware of oneself in relation to surrounding equipment, work independently and as a team with others. Ability to instruct/transfer job information/knowledge to others is required.  Ability to lift between 50 and 100 pounds is preferred.

Education: Bachelor’s Degree and five years’ work experience required.

Experience: A minimum of five years’ work experience is required.  Valid Driver's License required. 

Work Hours: Must have ability to work the shift/number of hours in which duties need to be accomplished, including overtime, holidays and weekends, as necessary.  Call-ins may occur as needed.

Working Conditions:  On a daily basis, there will be exposure to host mill areas, which include exposure to outside weather conditions as well as loud noise from equipment and dust from production processes. A considerable amount of walking and climbing is required to access the top portions of these facilities.

Safety Equipment: Safety equipment required while performing the duties of this job includes a personal lockout/tagout lock, ANSI approved hard hat and safety glasses, safety shoes/boots with metatarsal steel toe protection, protective gloves, high visibility clothing, and hearing and respiratory protection.
