Our Specialty Additives product line provides mineral-based technologies serving Paper, Packaging, Sealants & Adhesives, Paint & Coatings, Ceramics, Plastics, Food & Pharmaceutical markets.

 

Our Engineered Solutions segment offers advanced process technologies and solutions that are designed to improve our customers’ manufacturing processes and projects. This segment includes our High-Temperature Technologies and Environmental & Infrastructure product lines. Our High-Temperature Technologies product line offers specially-formulated blends and technologies primarily for Foundry and Steelmaking industries. Our Environmental & Infrastructure product line provides waterproofing, water purification, remediation and other fluid management technologies for critical projects for Remediation, Water Purification, and Infrastructure.

Job Summary                                                                                                                

The Scientist provides significant technical leadership in their field(s) of expertise. Their contributions are evident through the sale of new products, development of intellectual property, publications, and customer interactions directed toward solving technical problems. Expected to exercise a high degree of autonomy when formulating decisions regarding project design and execution. Regularly updates immediate supervisor on significant developments, impediments, and decisions.

Responsibilities

Primary Duties and Responsibilities: 

  • Plans and manages research, applications, and/or customer support efforts within or across industry segments
  • Coordinates both internal and external resources to meet project objectives.
  • Recommends courses of action to demonstrate initial project feasibility, advance existing projects toward a stated goal, or solve technical or commercial issues, which may involve interfacing directly with customers.
  • Responsible for expense control.
  • Responsible for managing the completion of projects through others they may or may not supervise directly.
  • Assists in determining staffing requirements and other project resource needs.
  • May, at their discretion or project need, execute experiments themselves, but not required.
  • Leads and promotes activities relating to key company initiatives: EHS, OE, Expense Reduction, and NPPD.
  • Generates ideas for new technology development (i.e., NPPD) that support business growth plans.
  • Promote business areas through involvement with technical associations and presentations.
  • Understands intellectual property landscape for area of specialty and actively submits invention disclosures to protect relevant developments.
  • Reviews competing technologies and develops technologies to support business strategy.

Education/Experience: 

 

Education: BS in Science or Engineering plus previous lab/field experience required. Advanced degree in Science or Engineering preferred. Speaks, reads, writes, and understands English.

 

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:  Ability to perform physical and chemical experiments and tests in a lab, pilot plant, or plant setting. Ability to operate a computer. Knowledge of industrial equipment/systems are required.  Candidate must have the ability to function effectively in a self-directed team environment and show this ability through previous training and/or our own testing protocols. Lean (Operational Excellence) background a definite plus. Knowledge of computers and ability to learn, use and troubleshoot computer programs utilized at SMI is required.  (Excel, Word, Adobe, Oracle, Kronos, PlantWeb, etc.)

 

Being under limited supervision, the employee is expected to be self-directed, highly motivated, take initiative and be persistent when appropriate to accomplish necessary duties and complete required work without prompting from the supervisor.  Additionally, the employee is expected to be adaptable/flexible to changing work assignments, perform multiple tasks at once, have a high level of integrity, dependability and self-control to maintain composure, learn and memorize procedures, prioritize work, manage time effectively and efficiently, meet established deadlines, display a cooperative demeanor, outstanding interpersonal skills, read, understand and follow all company, job specific and safety policies/procedures, and attend/use all required training.

 

Travel: Availability for some travel as a technical resource (interplant, training) is required.  

 

Working Conditions: While performing the duties of this job, an employee is typically exposed to dust, loud noise, high places, confined spaces, very low and/or bright light, and outside weather conditions.   Primarily works alone but may work as part of a team working in close proximity to others and works in close proximity with equipment.
