Position: Production & Processing Intern

Location: Canaan, CT

Compensation: $25.00/hr - $30.00/hr

Job Summary

Minerals Technologies has an opening for a Process & Manufacturing Support Engineering Intern in Canaan, CT. The intern will help develop and maintain applications to control the manufacturing process.  Help develop and implement various initiatives to maximize equipment availability, reliability, productivity, and minimize operational maintenance costs.

Responsibilities

  • Process troubleshooting & optimization. Support existing plants by identifying problems and implementing solutions.
  • Develops engineering flow diagrams, process and instrumentation diagrams, and mass and energy balances for existing, new and conceptual unit operations and processes.
  • Compiling and maintaining basis of design information.
  • Identifying technologies, process equipment, and unit operations for upgrading existing processes.
  • Develops new processes for the manufacture of new and/or improved products.
  • Gathers, evaluates and correlates data pertinent to product and process development, scale-up, commissioning and troubleshooting chemical and mineral product processing unit operations and processes.
  • Develops equipment specifications. Performs technical due diligence. Issues bid tabs including recommendations and risk assessment.
  • Knowledge of process instrumentation and associated equipment with the ability to make recommendations, configure, commission, and troubleshoot equipment and electrical connections.
  • Create deliverable Control System documentation.
  • Explore new technologies, techniques and procedures to evaluate and develop enhanced diagnostic and predicative capabilities for maintenance work force.
  • Development of Best Practices.
  • Understands and/or actively participates in the implementation of sustainable improvement processes, such as 5S, Kaizen, Daily Management Control, Standard Work and Problem Solving.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

Education:   

The ideal candidate is currently seeking a degree in Chemical, Mechanical, Mining or Industrial Engineering.

  • Strong analytical problem-solving skills.
  • Fluent in the English language with excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Self-motivated individual with excellent organization skills and attention to detail.
  • Able to work effectively as an individual and as part of a team.
  • Familiar with the operation of standard chemical plant unit operations.
  • Working knowledge of AutoCAD, Microsoft Office software and other standard software in an engineering and office environment. Strong computer literacy, especially the creation and use of various spreadsheet tools for improved efficiency and productivity.
  • Ability to read, understand and generate engineering drawings and documents including P&ID’s, PFD’s, mass and energy balance, equipment specifications, process descriptions, etc.

 

Plant process areas contain ladders, walkways, tight places, confined spaces, uneven terrain, and stairs, both inside and outside.  Must have the ability to climb multiple flights of stairs, work at various heights above the ground, stand, walk, bend, squat, reach, twist, lift, climb, push and pull to evaluate equipment in a production environment.

 

Work Hours: As agreed upon, based on intern availability and business needs.

 

Safety Training:

An intern hired to perform the duties of this position is required to be provided New Employee Training by a qualified individual or through the online training system.  Additionally, an employee must be provided further training if a job duty/task has changes which will affect the health and safety aspects of the employee’s position.
