Responsibilities

Job Summary

The Mechanic is a highly skilled shop employee who functions at a high level of capacity in several key areas, including having expertise in maintaining and repairing all equipment (including troubleshooting and preventative maintenance), acting as turn leader (where appropriate), - plus being available to assist in other shops and handling certain administrative and record keeping functions.

 

Be proficient in all aspects of equipment operation, maintenance and troubleshooting

  • Perform preventive maintenance, troubleshooting and repair of all equipment, including but not limited to Wire Feeders/Lance, Shotcrete pumps, shooters, Q-Vibe burners, forklifts, standard dry guns, Lasers, gas and diesel engines etc.
  • Perform pneumatic, hydraulic, electronic and electrical repairs to equipment.
  • Read schematics and diagrams.
  • Keep equipment clean and in working order.

Apply material (product) and use all relevant equipment as required

  • Follow all standard operating procedures regarding equipment and applications of product
  • Regularly perform specialty applications, e.g., iron ladles, steel ladles, tundishes
  • Assist in the rotation of product inventory
  • Minimize usage of consumables

Operate as turn leader, where appropriate

  • Supervise work team during shift
  • Communicate with Management regarding performance or policy compliance issues

Assist in administrative/record keeping functions

  • Record consumable parts usage and monitor inventory of parts
  • Complete turn paperwork and submit it as required by Management
  • Maintain BOF record keeping and field trial reports

Assist in the training and development of new employees

  • Demonstrate preventive maintenance and basic trouble shooting for new hires.
  • Assist in orientation process for new hires and actively advocate safety awareness.
  • Demonstrate proper equipment usage and knowledge of product application.
  • Lead by example regarding policy compliance, standard operating procedures, etc.

Assist in emergency call outs, help in other shops, and handle special applications

  • Respond to emergency equipment call outs.
  • Accept temporary fill in work at other shops, including, e.g., for Shotcreting,blast furnaces and steel ladles.

Maintain a strong focus on satisfying the customer

  • Maintain a professional, high profile with the customer.
  • Assist in new trials, provide feedback to Shop Supervisor and other managers.
  • Assist in the testing of new products, provide feedback.
  • Identify new sales opportunities, suggest new ideas.

Perform other duties as assigned

Qualifications

Knowledge: A high school diploma. Five years progressive experience in Steel Mill Service positions, previous steel-making or other related experience. Comprehensive knowledge of hydraulics, pneumatics, electricity and electronics, personal computer, and lasers. Complete knowledge of Company products, applications and equipment.

 

Skills & Abilities: Outstanding technical, mechanical, plus leadership/influence, performance management basics, communication, interpersonal, adaptability, ability to learn quickly and work independently, initiative, integrity, customer and quality focus, analysis and judgment/problem-solving, safety awareness and planning and organizing.

 

Physical & Mental: Ability to lift up to 50 pounds (or more in certain shops). Must be able to withstand the physical pressures of constant standing, walking, bending, climbing, kneeling, crouching, reaching, sitting, extremes of hot and cold, as well as carrying, lifting, pushing and pulling heavy objects. Must be able to gather, organize and analyze data, draw conclusions and handle a high level of stress.

 

General: May require working rotating shifts, emergency call outs, and overtime. Must be able to operate all equipment such as forklift, shooter, gun, caster equipment, laser, etc. Must wear all required safety gear. May be required to travel.

Internal: Employees in work group, Sales and Marketing managers, Technology, Human Resources, Customer Service, Purchasing, senior managers, etc.

External: Customer employees - especially management, suppliers of parts, safety equipment, materials, etc.
